Christmas memories

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Thanks to Donna for the tag. Poking my tongue out at Carrie...LOL... she knows why...

All these Christmas pages and memories have got me to thinking about my own. As a child growing up we didn't get a lot of stuff through out the year. Only on Birthdays etc. So Christmas was a big deal to us. About 5 weeks before Mum would ask us what we wanted. We would go in to Oxford and browse around Boswells which had a huge Toy department. We would do to Santa's grotto and tell him what we wanted. Mum would begin the annual hoarding of food for Christmas. Nuts, Candy, chocolate, Tangerines. We didn't put the decorations up until about two weeks before Christmas. This involved paper chains across the ceiling..with much cussing and muttering by my dad... a beautiful tree with the coloured fairy lights..Christmas Crackers on the sideboard ready to be pulled at Christmas dinner.. and the music..always had music playing in our house and Christmas was no different. Mum and Dad would seem in such good mood..sneaking a little kiss here and there and a quick waltz around the lounge passing through. It was a magical time and I know it was the kind of life my dad dreamed of on a daily basis... <sigh> We would get so many Christmas cards..they would be strung up on a string above the sofa.. if we were lucky we would get snow and dad would take us sledding. At least we would get heavy frost and we would go skating on the frozen pond. Christmas eve we would go visiting relatives...it was pure magic. The adults would have a toddy or two and the kids would eat candy till we were all on a major sugar rush combined with the excitement of Christmas someone would always end up getting smacked...LOL Christmas Morning we would wait for Dad to give us the okay to come down stairs... the lights would be out except for the tree and then we would start delving in our sacks... the smell of the Turkey cooking in the oven..the sherry..the carols playing...the TV showing the kids in Hospital... ahhhhhhhhhh the memories...Christmas hats were a must at dinner...Mum would always nod off in the afternoon as well as dad and we kids would play with our new toys and munch from our selection boxes.....

And you wonder why I love Christmas so much??

You know, it seems that memories of Christmas's past seem to be more strong than Christmas's present, well at leas t for me.  I wish I could go back and relieve those old memories.  Have a good Sunday!

You are right, Christmas in the past was much better, not like it is now! I am just waiting for the TV commercials for next years summer holidays!!!! ;-)

Your memories are similar to mine Lyn.  Christmas had more meaning back then when we didn`t get given gifts as often. I really love Christmas too and love to see my family`s faces when they open their presents. :o)

I love this memory ! What a special time for you ... How lucky you are to have such wonderful memories of the holidays.  It sounds so much like my own Christmases of the past.  There were five kids in my family, and money was tight, so Christmas was the only time of the year that we splurged at all.  I, too, remember the Christmas crackers being lined up near the table.  Until recently, they were very hard to find in the U.S., but being English Canadian, my mother insisted on having them, even if it meant that she made them herself.  Thanks for sharing a delightful time in your past.   Tina

I have one Christmas memory from my childhood...it was the last Christmas we celebrated and I got a black kitten and an ironing board. I remember nothing else about it at all. BUT, I have made a gazillion memories and traditions with my daughters and it is so cool when I hear them talking about them and asking me when it will be time for such and such. Love you sweetie. I'm excited for you that L will be home soon too!

Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful memories with us.  My husband has had similar ones here.  He says he got a sack at the bottom of his bed with Christmas gifts in it.  I just learned about selection boxes this year.

Oh those were the days Lyn....when Christmas really was Christmas.

My mums sis lived 2 floors above us and on Xmas day she cooked the turkey and we cooked the veggies. We opend presents in our place and then after having dinner in my aunts we had more presents in the evening. As my sister and i were the only 2 children we got to deliver the presents to the respective person...lol. Then in the eveing the adults had a tipple and i for one can remember going round and draining the advocat out of the glasses  :o))

We also had the cards stringed up and the tree with the little fairy on the top....oh the good old days   :o)
