Good morning Campers!
How are we all this Saturday morning? Seems like a few of us have the after Christmas.. no sign of spring..what to do with ourselves.. blues. Not hard to understand really after the hustle and bustle of the holidays and all the preparations and socializing...nothing to look forward to except the cold dark days of winter. One of the reasons I love living in Florida...on our coldest days we can still enjoy being outside...I am definitely going to take advantage of that today.
The first estimate we got on the windows is probably the one we will go with. We have had higher and lower estimates but they were the most professional company and their warranty and professionalism stood out. So in about 4-6 weeks we should have new windows. just in time for the sweltering summer. I am hoping these energy star windows will lower my electricity bills.
Nothing much else going on.. we went out for our usual Friday night Mexican dinner last night..it was excellent as usual...
I did watch an absolutely fascinating documentary about Amish Teenagers. They have this tradition called Rumspringa..when the Amish turn 16..both male and female they have the chance to experience "Rumspringa"..a sort of rite of passage.. they are allowed to experiment with drugs, alcohol, sex, smoking, music, partying, driving, etc etc then they have to make the decision whether of not to join the church. if they choose to join they are then baptized into the church. there is no "time" limit on this..they can "Rumspringa" as long as they need to. Some youths leave home. Some do this while living in the family home.the family does not turn their back on them if they choose not to join the church. however if one decides to be baptized into the church and then leaves they are shut out completely. I found it fascinating.90% of the teenagers give up their new found "modern" ways and return to be baptized into the community. the hardest thing they said to give up was driving. ;-)
here is the link to the film

I thought your number three said great boobs !! LMAO ! It's early !
I have heard about the Rumspinga with the Amish... could you imagine if we "allowed" our 16 year old to do this !!! Never mind most partake in these activities regardless?? Might be good idea..to just get it over with.
hugs,
Ellen
Oh, I do envy you your sunny days, especially now when we are having a real spate of rain and wind...going on for over a week now! I also envy you being able to go out for a good Mexican dinner! I really miss that! Mexican is one of my favourite types of food! I have seen that program on the Amish teens. It was dead interesting! I am obssessed with Amish anything! I find their culture fascinating. I must have about 6 Amish cookbooks!

Since the rain has stopped, the weather here has been great. Not too cold, and not hot... just great. I saw some kind of reality show on the Amish and their break. It was interesting. I wish I could see the one you watched. I love watching different cultures doing things... its always so interesting. Take care!
I've seen that documentary before, it's really good. There's an Amish community a couple hours away from my parents (they live in KS the community is in Mo.) We love going there and going shopping. It's truly wonderful that although these kids do experience living in the "modern" world, they truly apperciate their own traditions and life and they want to raise their own families in that way. So often I think of how all of us would benefit from far more simplicity!
God Bless and have a wonderful weekend.
About 3 years ago there was a reality show called "Amish in the City" on television. A group of Amish kids mixed with a group of "city" kids in a house in Los Angeles to see how they could survive and make their decision as to whether to return to their culture or to leave it. It was fascinating. Anyone else remember the show?
Lyn, hiya :) Good luck on the windows, C and I are going to have to do that one day soon also, make the house more energy efficient. Will be checking out the Amish documentary also...thanks for sharing that!! Also, thank you for your comments hon :) I appreciate them very much! Have a great one, Teresa
Wow..I grew up very close to an Amish Community and never knew that. Bam
I had read in different books about the Amish enlightening of teenagers...and guess it is an ok idea....they give permission to do what we Christian folk tell our teenagers to NOT do....amazing ideas....wonder if anyone has done a study to see which idea works best...or maybe it is just fifty fifty??? happy day....hugs from KY...Ora
Are your electricity bills for air conditioning? Surely not for heating like over here.
I saw a similar programme about the Amish a while ago. It was surprising to see how many stay with their tradions, I found it heart warming. I think I'd like to do it part time LOL. Armish in the week and naughty old me at weekends!

I rememeber watching a reality tv show about Amish kids who were experiencing the "real world" and they were living in a house with regular folk and they all had to adjust. it was actually a lot of fun to watch, esp the arguments.
I think at the end of the day, if we all got to experience a different way of life, we would all probably revert back to our original way of living. Esp if our orignial way of living is based on our religious beliefs.
I can't wait to go to Florida, not because of our crappy weather, but just because I miss it so much there. Who'd of thunk it, but I do. I get a little homesick when you talk of Florida because I know that you're so close to Adam and that I would do anything to trade places with you and be with him right now.
I'm glad that you'll be getting new windows. and good thing, no bugs coming in. You're right, screens are an absolute must in Florida just because over here we only really have the common house fly coming in the window, maybe a bee or a wasp here and there. but you guys have mosquitos and yellow flies and all sorts of scary things that sting and bite. Its a lot to spend on windows, or maybe not, but at least you've found people that you can trust and rely on to do a good job!
Hope you're enjoying your weekend!!!

Thats facinating about the Amish. I had no idea. I would have never thought that in a million years. I guess it just goes to show that when teens have parents that are strict and hound their kids about staying away from all that stuff the more they wanna do it, but if you just let them have that experience they will come back to their roots.........neat!! Thanks for sharing that.....very interesting!! Have a great weekend.

I learned that about the Amish when I worked in Nashville at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC). I worked with a tech named Amanda who mentioned in the break room one day that her grandfather was Amish. I inquired as to how that was possible and it turns out that her grandfather met her grandmother during this rite of passage period. As she put it, "My grandmother got her hooks in him and that was all she wrote."
I was also shocked by the 90% return. That says a LOT about how the rest of us live our lives.
That is extremely interesting a good way to live .Cant imagine being outside (for long ) in January ,here in the good old UK lol can you ? ...love Jan xx
Lyn, that is very interesting about the Amish, now you got me wanting mexican food, Hugs Lisa
I just got all new windows over the summer; they are so nice and so easy to clean!!
Enjoy your weekend!
Maria
Sounds like those new windows are going to be a nice addition...
Very interesting facts, I did not know about the Amish teens. Thanks for sharing...have a great weekend..
Hugs and love,

Usually the middle of the road estimate is a good one to go with. You know they aren't out to gouge you and you also can feel confident that they will do the job well. Hope your havin' a good weekend. Take care.
Phil
I do envy you your Florida climate, especially during these dark Winter days that seem to go on forever. Mind you, I think I envy your your Summers as well...lol! I`ll go and look at the Amish link now. :o)

i watched that movie a month ago. it was cool. I cant wait to see your new windows!
love, lj
Hello Lyn, chech out Amish in the city a reality show where they bring Amish and L A teenagers together............. Facinating.

Wow, I would have never thought the Amish would allow this! That's pretty cool though! Many times I have thought how neat it would be to experience Amish life, just for a few weeks or days even. It must just be a peacful existence!
Being in south Texas, I love winter, the colder the better, but cold here is below 70. Thank you for stopping by my blog! You are now on my alerts :)
Amy
I remember hearing something about that with the amish children. Driving would be hard to give up!
When I was with my ex, we had gotten some new windows - double pane and something else to them that really cut our electric and gas bill. It was wonderful. I'm sure you will love those windows in the summer.
Normally we have such mild weather here in WA, this year we had such hot days that were miserable and now terrible cold snowy days. I'm ready for something warmer!
Monica
Lyn---just popping by your journal to check it out, since you were kind enough to visit mine. I, too, love the climate here in AZ, even with the sweltering summers. Hot? Just jump in the pool. But I do miss the ocean. I think I need a beach vacation. Have a great Sunday! :) De
I'm sure you will love your new windows! I hope it does help with the electric bill. Our bill seems to be going up and I think it might have something to do with our old electric company being bought out by someone new ::sigh::
Have a great Sunday :)
Hugs,
Gretchen
Well, that was interesting about the Amish. Here some of the Menonite Teens hid a vehicle in the woods. I guess they wanted to have their Rumspringa and Church too. (Have their cake and eat it too.)
Wish my parents had allowed a Rumspringa. LOL. Wouldn't have felt like I needed a continuous "Rumspring it" when I left home....LOL. I'm still Rumspringing. LOL. But I'm a good girl still and try to follow the Lord's way.
Good entry.
Sonya
The Mexican dinner sounds great, so many good things to choose from. Interesting about the Amish program. I enjoyed reading your journal.
I've heard of rumspringa and I am also baffled but I guess you go with what you are accostumed to have a great day. Love mexican! love vicky
When did you get so many readers?! Wow. I am always fascinated by the Amish. Did you ever see the Amish in the City reality show? It was great.
Traci
