I survived! and a question about CATS....

Hi Campers!!

I survived Black Friday..my feet are killing me and my wallet is empty but I had a blast...more on that later..I have a question..what in the heck can I do about cats using the dirt  under my front windows as their litter box?? Is there anything I can put out to deter them?? these are not my cats ..these cats belong to the house across the street..at least I think they do..they sit on our cars..spray our cars (gross)..and now they are crapping under our window...my lovely lads put up the Christmas lights while I was out shopping and they disturbed the dirt under the window and OMG it freakin stinks!!! I am really getting fed up with those cats..and their irresponsible owners..I hate cats but wish them no harm I just want them to crap somewhere else!!!

suggestions??

Pet shops usually have something for that or try mothballs to deter them

I guess rat poison is out of the question, huh?  That wouldn't be very nice, would it?  (LOL!!!)

I do think they sell stuff at the Pet Store....(lol)

Broken up eggshells (make their paws hurt), black garden netting just under your mulch (they can't dig), cut up pieces of lemons and oranges (cats hate citrus/but you have to replace often) and talking to your neighbors about spay/neutering may help (males don't spray after)!

Best of luck...

be well,

Hiya! Lyn.....I've been shopping for that very thing today, but didn't find what I wanted. Not sure of the name but they emit a high pitched sound, that cats do not like (Ultrasonic). Believe it or not I like Cats, but not someone elses. I had one for 14yrs,after she died I didn't bother again. My new Neighbours have two, they are 'Housecats' but it's all the others that come into my Garden, looking for them. Found feathers on the lawn this week, and the birds have almost stopped coming to the Bird Table.
Hope you sort it!

Try mothballs or cayenne pepper.  In fact, Walmart makes stuff (comes in a little pouch) that you mix with your birdseed to keep the squirrels out.  It's mostly cayenne pepper and works like a charm.  The squirrels can't handle it but the birds don't notice.  Anyway, I can barely stand to open the package to mix it with the bird so I'm thinking that it might just work on all mammals.  It doesn't smell bad, it's just that when you pour it into the seed, it floats around in the air and makes me sneeze.  I'd give it a whirl.

Hi Lyn,
I have 5 cats, some of them were rescued from bad homes. I use a spray called get off, or you can buy plants to deter them. If you ask at your local garden centre they should have some. I found this to be the best option and it grows all year round. Failing that, get a BIG dog.
Hope you're all well.   Love loads   Pat x x x

Try pepper and/or jeyes fluid. Better still, by a rotweiller. ;O)

Congrats on surviving Black Friday, you are far braver than I am. As for the cats, you should be able to find a spray at your local pet center, that will deter them from using it. Love the Christmas look of your blog. Glad to hear your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving! (Hugs) Indigo

I heard if you spray that cologne, after shower stuff called,  Jean Natee (I'm not kidding) that cats will stay away.  I have a friend who had a problem with her cat and the Christmas tree, and the corrected the problem.  I don't know if it will work outdoors though.  Black Friday..  I was up at the crack of dawn too..but I wasn't at the stores..  I was driving home from Arizona.  eeek.  I'm sooo tired--just like you I'm sure..  Take care - Julie :)

Glad you had fun on Black Friday! I didn't go early in the morning, but I DID get out to Target to do some birthday shopping for my soon to be 4 year old later in the day. It wasn't crowded at all. LOL. I DID get some Christmas decorations and stuff to put up the tree this weekend, but no Christmas gifts. LOL.

As for the cats...hmm..have no idea. Hopefully someone else had a great idea! And don't use Jeanne's suggestion! ROFL. No rat poison. ;)
Have a great weekend!

The Cats...I've heard mothballs.  I wouldn't do orange or lemon peels...you know "Florida" & Fruit Rats.

Iv'e been a gardener all my life Lynn and yet to find anything that deters cats sorry. You name it iv'e used it or tried it.Whatever you buy they will come back when you are not around.Sorry to have to say also but especially if they have made a run now.Usualy if you leave the dog around during the day no,but still they will use that part of the ground now in the night.Sorry it's under your windows.I don't think there is anything worse and they used to realy make my blood boil.Like you say the smell is terrible nothing worse.Try patting the earth hard down flat where the culprit has started it might deter for a while. They like the loose dirt.In th ened I have even flagged places of annoyance.Take Care God Bless Kath

LOL  I have no idea what to do about outside cats : x  Mine are inside one's and never go outside...they wouldn't know what to do!  I do hate seeing cat's that just wander outside tho, so many cat's die because their owners think that "it's their nature, we can't lock them up inside" well, let me tell you - yes you can and they are quite happy for it!  they are safe, warm, have food, litter box etc. they don't have to battle other cats, racoons, opossums, coyotes, wild dogs etc.  they don't get feline leukemia, rabies, other things like that... ughhh.  Hugz, Teresa

sprinkle a generous amount of black pepper all around the area you don't want the cats, it doesn't harm them well except for the sneezes

Sorry I have no idea on what to do about the cats. Here where I live we might call Animal Control and complain about it and see if they would do anything...cats shouldn't be running the streets....June

My neighbors cat uses my garden as his litter box.  I was told once moth balls would keep them away.  They don't like the smell.

Hi there, well I am a cat lover and I own a cat, but, I have a large garden of my own which she uses and I have had her spayed so that she causes no smell.  I find that to deterr other cats from coming into my garden put orange peel around the garden they hate the smell and wont come near it. So sorry you are having this trouble especially under your own front window.  It is usually male cats that smell, hope you will be able to find a solution to your prolem. Kathie.

Maybe Santa will bring you a nice foot massage...  As for the cat problem, I really don't think there is a deterrent that actually works.  My suggestions are: a) land mines b) bear traps c) a cougar d) a coyote  HAHAHA !  Don't get me wrong, I am a cat lover.  I have none of my own, due to allergies with three out of five of us, but cats really should be kept indoors.  I know that catbox really sucks, but it is much worse than ruining the relationships with your neighbors... All cats love gardens.  All peoples love gardens.  All peoples hate the way the garden smells after the neighborhood cats have visited...

Sorry for the cynicism, I wish I had a real answer, but hope I made you smile anyway!  Have a great day!!  xoxo MeMeadow

I haven't read the other answers but I would say moth balls keep dogs, cats and squirrels at bay.    Anne

You've had a lot of suggestions from your readers. I've never even heard of anything to use as a deterrent. If you figure out one that works, please let us know.

I have heard moth balls will keep animals out of your flower beds. My sister used them to keep her dog out and it worked. Just put a few around inside the flower bed. Lemme know if it workd.

I've also heard that scattering moth balls will keep cats (and other animals) away.  You could try calling a vet's office or pet supply store to see if there are any products out there that deter them.  (You could also set out a live trap -- a lot of times animal control will loan you one -- and then catch them and have animal control pick them up -- they'll cite the owners for letting them run loose, probably.)

Hi Lyn,
I am not a fan of cats either. I stay away from them and for the most part they stay away from me, but only because I have 2 big Rottweilers and I "shew" them away. I caught one sitting in our tree, waiting to catch one of the birds eating from our feeder. He quickly got the taste of the hose. Let me tell you he was completely SOAKED! And he has not returned since; 3 weeks ago. I don't care if my neighbor likes it or not! She keeps all 3 of her cats outside so it's her fault if something happens. Very irresponsible of her; we're not in the country, we're in Las Vegas! LOL

Take care,
Gayla
