Yellow pages and Florida rooms..........

Good Morning Campers!

Seems a little clarification is needed.  ;-)

A Florida room is a glass room usually on the back of the house in the style of a Conservatory..for the Brits..or a glassed in porch for the Americans..here in Florida we refer to it as the Florida room or Sun room...we pretty much live in ours...it has heat and air conditioner and overlooks the pool..it is where my Computer is so you know I am out there all the time..;-) See above pic....

As for the yellow page incident..a little more complicated...My Mum and me did not get along very well during my early teenage years..in fact we fought like cats and dogs..and when I say fought I mean she used to beat the living daylights out of me and I used to try and hide from her...I used to lock myself in the bathroom and cuss her out from the safety of the bathroom only to have her break the door in!! This particular day we were shouting at each other over who knows what and she was chasing me through the kitchen..I made it to the back door when she cracked me over the head with the phone book and knocked me out...I fell down the back steps and ended up on the concrete flooor of the back porch....I was only out for a few seconds I guess...but it scared her...and she was scared of awhat my dad was going to say...funny thing is I can't remember what happened after that..I had an egg size lump on the top of my head and a headache but what happened between her, me and my dad I have no idea....just another crazy day in my crazy house....these days things would have been different but in my neighbourhood this was the norm..we all fought with our mums..we all got the daylight beat out of us and no one said a thing....I will admit however this was a bit extreme.... ;-)

Have a good thursday..it has stopped raining here at last!!

OMG, you had a concussion!

I know exactly what you're speaking of...not getting along with Mom.  I could share some tales with you!  LOL  And you're right, back when you and I were growing up...if Child Protective Services existed, it was unknown to "us".

Thankfully, the town I grew up in had a very small phone book, Yellow Pages included, and Mom never thought to hit me with that.  LOL

Hugs,

Cindy

That is sad that you had such a horrible time with your mum.  On a happier note, I have wanted a sun room for years!  I'll get one someday.

Been hit over the head with the yellow pages, beats the frying pan. At least you had the emergency numbers to hand lol.I wouldnt have dared answer my mother back like the kids do nowadays. Our hands are tied regarding punishments. Although i would never dream of hitting my son over the head with the yellow pages its too heavy for a start lol. Your florida room looks lovely. Its very bright and airy. I hope you are having a good week.
love and hugs

I always wanted a 3 season room just like that.  Someday.  I remember my mom ripping the door off the bathroom lock to spank me as a teen.  I remember deserving it as I was a horrible teen.  Now my brother knocked my out hitting me on the head with the phone but never a phone book, LOL.  Love your room

Oh, a sun room! I was picturing some wacky room with parrots and hammocks....heh heh. (No, I don't really think you would have a wacky parrot room.) Very pretty. I'd stay out there all the time, too. --Cin

Wow.  I had no idea.  Im kinda at a loss as to what to say about that... you seem so OK with it after all this time has passed... but, maybe you are choosing not to dwell???  I don't know.  I am sorry that you had to experience something so painful.  (In many ways!)  Does your dad know now?

God Bless you-
Amanda

I call the room a sunroom and I love it. There is a house a couple of streets over that has one and I always say I want that house, but that's the only reason and the big front porch across the whole front of the house. I would live in that room too. Beautiful.
Take care, Chrissie

We had a sun room when I lived in California (it kinda just comes with the houses out there). So sorry to hear of what you had to endure as a child. You grew from that to be a wonderful and caring person, who has a great sense of humor and outlook on life. Hope your Today brings you many reasons to smile! Take care,
Katie

I lived in Fla. for 9 years, mostly around the Ocala, Bellview area. Spent some time in St. Petersburg, and Tampa. Spent an entire 4 months just traveling along the beachfront and working here and there, Loved it. So I was aware of what a Florida room was. I used to nickname them the Southern Comfort rooms. Simply because they reminded me of the old Southern Porches where people would hang out sitting with a cool glass of Tea or Lemonade.

As for the Phone Book Incident.......I don't believe in beating a child, but some days I wonder if our parents didn't know a thing or two. Especially when you see how rude and inconsiderate this latest generation has become. My mother used to always whack me upside the head with one of those old style marble handle brushes they had. Those things hurt like hell, she may as well took a hammer to my head. I remember one incident where she told my brother not to use the Lord's name in vain (She was extremely religious). She was 8 months pregnant and big as a house. My brother figured she couldn't chase him and shouted it as loud as he could. She threw a huge Spanish onion at him , hit him dead center in the forehead. He was out for about 10 minutes. Guarantee you he never said the Lord's name in vain again, at least not in her house. Love your  Florida room Lynne and the furniture it's super duper.I never hit my children on the head. I think because my Mother never hit me.She always said if you have to crack your children when you get any,do it on there legs it's stings the most, and can do little damage. She hated it when she saw kids getting hit on the head. But big softy me  never liked smacking I had other ways of dealing with my Four terrible teans LOL!! It was very hard work too. They have all grown up to respect without being hit.I do agree many of todays kids need something like you got though Haaaaa.Sorry about that LOL!! I can just imagine the yellow pages going DONG!! So funny it tickles me.Have a great day.Take Care God Bless Kath

You sound just like my friend. . often she tell me how her Mum hit her with the sweeping brush and shouted at her like a raging lunatic. . often just for looking insolent. We laugh hysterically over this. . .and now she is a Mum of nine lovely kids and understands even less why her Mum hit her so much.Still. . .she looks back with a lot of love about her even though there were a lot of bad times.

Wow...what a beautiful room...I would spend a lot of time there as well...June:)

We had a bipolar woman in the neighborhood who used to hit her son(who was a nice kid, but just a little different)with a belt & just scream.  After the first time I heard it myself, I approached her, & she said:  You don't have kids; this is normal.  Uhm, no, I don't have kids, but NO, that is not normal.  So if all the neighbors were like that by you, they were all crazy.

My mother and I didn't get along either.  When I was small I got paddled hard and long, and for the life of me, I can't remember a single thing that provoked her to do that.  I'm sure I was naughty though.  When I became a teenager, she stopped and turned to more mind-game warfare.  It took us most of my adult life to come to terms with my childhood and to move on and forgive.
